Dallas, TX – Since people first built houses, those structures have sheltered more than people. It seems that wherever we go, and whatever type of home we build, there are a host of creatures that like to live along side us. These include creepy crawly insects and the less creepy, but just as crawly, members of the rodentia family.
Mice and rats are the most commonly seen rodent pests around the house, although people do run into problems with squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, and even muskrats and beavers. The problems associated with different types of rodents are varied, but in almost all cases people want to be rid of these animals as quickly as completely as possible.
To this end, a number of methods are used to carry out extermination. Rodents can be very adaptable, though, and as we shall see, most of these approaches do not work for long.
The most commonly used solutions to a rodent problem are traps. We have all seen mouse and rat traps, barbaric, brutal, and efficient in their purpose. This solution poses several problems. First of all, there is the unpleasantness associated with removing the dead body from the trap. Secondly, rats and mice are both communal and highly intelligent. One, two, or more of the stupider (or braver) animals may be caught, but there are guaranteed to be more. Those that survive will be smart enough to evade traps in the future.
A second method frequently employed is the use of rodent bait traps. These traps entice rodentia family members with food, and then close on them live or let them escape after eating the bait, which is laced with rodent poison. In the case of the poison, however, home owners are left with the task of removing rodents from behind walls, often after the animals have died. It’s a difficult task that can also be costly.
One home remedy for these pests which can be effective is the use of an animal which is a natural predator of rodents, such as a cat or a dog. However, even these helpers may fail if the population is too large; or your pet may even refuse to catch the critters at all (think Garfield!).
The problem with almost all home rodent reduction remedies is that they only work up to a certain point. After that, they cease to become effective and they may even cause more trouble than the animals themselves, as is the case with rodent poison.
The most effective way of dealing with a rodentia problem is through the services of someone who makes a living in mice and rat extermination. Rodents are predictable, and those who run pest control services are trained in their ways. They can assess the population, suggest solutions, and even come up with advice on future rodent prevention strategies.
No matter what species of rodent you are dealing with, consult a pest control professional to come up with the right solution. Home remedies are never all they are cracked up to be; they either just don’t work or don’t get the job done completely.
