Dallas, TX - Pet stains can be some of the worst damage your carpeting may face. If they are not dealt with quickly they can easily become permanent and have the added problems of odor and health risks. There are a few things you can do to remove these stains from your carpet and help keep it looking great.
As with any stain, the number one advantage you have is speed. The sooner you can deal with a stain the better your chances of removing it are. The longer a liquid sits on your carpet, the more likely it will become a permanent stain. The main reason for this is that at the heart of any carpet are the carpet fibers. These tiny fibers are spun tightly into a strand that is attached to a backing material to create your carpet. When a liquid is dropped onto these fibers they start to soak it up and will also start to dry. If this happens it makes removing the stain a lot harder. The good news is that most modern carpets are treated to be stain resistant. Many of them are also treated to be more durable as well for pet stains. The way this protection is added to the carpet is by treating the fibers with a chemical that makes them absorb liquids more slowly. The more expensive carpets absorb stains even more slowly than the less expensive ones. The thing to remember is that the fibers don’t repel stains; they just absorb them more slowly, so they will still become stained if the liquid is left long enough. This is why you need to address the stain as soon as possible to avoid the long-term damage. Also, even though the fibers are stain resistant, the backing material and padding aren’t and can soak up a lot of the pet stain if you don’t remove it quickly.
The first ting you need to do when you discover a stain is to try and remove as much of the liquid as possible. If it is a large area that has been affected, you may have to pull the carpet back from the nearest corner to expose the padding beneath it. If this padding is wet, you should cut out the affected area and discard it. This can easily be replaced with another piece of padding from the local home improvement store to match. This padding is easy to cut to size and fairly inexpensive. You want to try and attack the liquid that hit the carpet from both sides, so place a layer of paper towels down on top of a layer or newspapers and then lay the carpet back down. On the top of the carpet lay the paper towels down first and then the layer of newspaper. Add some weight to the area to push the carpeting into the towels to absorb the liquid. Let this sit a while and repeat and replace the towels as needed until they are dry.
Once you have removed as much of the liquid as possible, mix a solution of warm water and white vinegar in a bucket. Try to keep the mix to about a cup of white vinegar to a gallon of warm water. This may smell a little funny, but will dry odorless. Apply this cleaning solution to the carpet and repeat the towel padding until dry. When you have completed the process, vacuum the room to finish off the cleaning. This should solve the staining problem and leave your carpet clean and smelling fresh.
