Dallas, TX – Pet stains can be one of the toughest things to remove successfully from carpet and furniture and requires very specific treatment to make sure you get all of the stain. The trick with removing a pet stain is to treat it quickly and not to use any cleaner that will cause the stain to set. Many household cleaners that are designed for other types of stains are not the best thing to use on pet stains and will actually make the situation worse.
The first thing to do when a pet urinates on your carpet is to remove as much of the liquid as possible. The best way to do this is to blot the area with newspaper, or paper towels until you have removed most of the liquid. You can use a pair of latex gloves to protect your hands during the cleaning just to be safe. Place a thick layer of paper towels over the area and then a layer of newspapers. Stand on the area for a minute or two and then discard the paper towels. If the newspaper is wet, discard this as well. Repeat the process until the paper towels are no longer wet and then you can proceed to the actual cleaning. The more liquid you remove at this stage, the easier the cleaning will go and the less chance you will have of odors developing. If the stain is a large one, you may need to peel back the carpeting to remove the excess liquid beneath the carpet. If you do this, be sure to remove and discard the padding under the carpeting since this will act like a sponge and retain the urine, which can develop a long-term odor. You can easily buy a section of the padding cheaply from a local home improvement store to replace the damaged one. If the liquid has soaked into the actual flooring material, or if you haven’t gotten to the stain in time and it has dried, you may need to seal the flooring with a latex paint or varnish to prevent the odor.
Once you have removed any liquid and the area is essentially dry, you can clean the carpeting with a mixture of white vinegar and water. Mix about a ¼ cup of vinegar to about a quart of water. Apply this to the carpet with a sponge and try not to soak the carpet. Once this has been applied, go back to the blotting technique to remove the liquid and the stain. If this isn’t completely successful you may need to use an enzymatic cleaner. These can be found at most home improvement store and are fairly inexpensive. The key to this type of cleaner is that it is organic in nature and will work well with pet stains.
Once the stain has been removed you may want to consider an organic pet odor product to treat the carpet just to make sure that odors won’t develop. It is really important to remove any hint of an odor so that your pet won’t consider this a good place to repeat the mistake. Pets like to relieve themselves in a specific area and if they can detect odor from their urine, they will likely visit this area again. Another good idea is to temporarily place the wet paper towels from the cleaning in the area you do want your pets to relieve themselves and this can help train them on where to go.
