Dallas, TX – The main trick with keeping any carpeting clean is regular maintenance and dealing with a stain or spill quickly. The longer you wait between cleanings and the longer a spill sits, the harder it will be to restore your carpet. Dealing with a problem with your carpet now will help you avoid doing three times as much work later to clean your carpet.
All modern carpets are basically a collection of fibers that are woven together in various patterns that hold them together. These weaving styles determine what type of carpet it is and the number of fibers helps determine the pile of the carpet. Normally, the higher the number of fibers, the better the carpet. The thing to remember about any carpet is that the easiest time to clean dirt and stains from it is when this dirt is still on or near the surface.
When dirt is brought into a room, the carpet will act like a brush to wipe away dirt particles from the bottom of a person’s foot or shoe. This dirt then settles on the top of the carpet. If you vacuum it right away, you can easily remove most or all of this dirt. If you wait however, this surface dirt will slowly fall down deeper and deeper into the fibers as the carpet is walked on, and will soon be beyond your vacuums reach. At this point no matter how many times you vacuum the room, you won’t be able to get to these deep-seated dirt particles. This is why it is essential that you vacuum your carpet on a weekly basis if not more often. It is also important to vacuum after a party or other high-traffic event as this allows you to catch the dirt brought into the room before it has a chance to settle. Vacuuming on a regular basis will remove more than half of the dirt from your room and extend the life of your carpets by years.
In addition to a regular vacuuming, you should also have your carpets professionally cleaned at least one a year. This cleaning should be a hot water extraction cleaning, which is what most of the leading carpet manufacturers recommend. This method of cleaning involves the heating of a water and cleaning solution to very high temperatures, that is then injected deep into your carpet. The combination of the heat and the cleaning agent will loosen any deep-set dirt and hold it in solution. This is then followed by a quick, high-powered vacuuming of the carpet to extract the water, cleaning solution and trapped dirt. This method will remove even the most deep-seated dirt in your carpeting and will prolong the life of your carpeting as well.
Dealing with stains and spills is another time you need to act quickly. Most spills can be handled with a simple dabbing with a clean dry cloth and some soda water. Always blot the spill and never scrub it as this will disperse the stain even further, and also drive it deeper into the carpet. If you need a stronger solution than the soda water, a mixture of 1-part white vinegar and 1-part water works well for most stains and won’t leave a residue behind like many commercial cleaners.
