Vacuuming on a regular basis will remove more than half of the dirt from your room and extend the life of your carpets by years.

In addition to a regular vacuuming, you should also have your carpets professionally cleaned at least one a year. This cleaning should be a hot water extraction cleaning, which is what most of the leading carpet manufacturers recommend. This method of cleaning involves the heating of a water and cleaning solution to very high temperatures, that is then injected deep into your carpet. The combination of the heat and the cleaning agent will loosen any deep-set dirt and hold it in solution. This is then followed by a quick, high-powered vacuuming of the carpet to extract the water, cleaning solution and trapped dirt. This method will remove even the most deep-seated dirt in your carpeting and will prolong the life of your carpeting as well.

Dealing with stains and spills is another time you need to act quickly. Most spills can be handled with a simple dabbing with a clean dry cloth and some soda water. Always blot the spill and never scrub it as this will disperse the stain even further, and also drive it deeper into the carpet. If you need a stronger solution than the soda water, a mixture of 1-part white vinegar and 1-part water works well for most stains and won’t leave a residue behind like many commercial cleaners.
