Dallas, TX-Years ago it was very common to see children or even adults with crooked teeth or teeth with spaces because braces and orthodontics treatment was not near as common as it is today. Orthodontics and braces are more common today with the assistance of payment plans made available by orthodontics as a way to make braces and orthodontic work more affordable.
Orthodontics is a special method of dentistry that involves the study and treatment of teeth irregularities, crooked or misaligned teeth and disproportionate jaws. Orthodontics may deal with simple procedures such as crooked teeth or may deal with more complex issues like modifying facial growth. The most common use of orthodontics today is for aesthetic reasons by improving the appearance of the patient’s teeth. While in the process of straightening the teeth, orthodontics is also used to improve the patient’s bite and make it more functional, which usually will improve the smile and teeth in general.
Braces are put on teeth that are crooked or misaligned. Their purpose is to gradually shift them in to proper placement. Today you see more and more children and adults wearing braces, mostly because of the convenient payment plans orthodontics are making available to patients. Braces are used to correct problems such as overbites, underbites, open bites, crooked teeth and any jaw or teeth flaws, whether they’re structural or cosmetic. Braces consist of wires (silver or colored) that are welded on the teeth and kept for anywhere from a few months to a couple of years, depending on the severity of the original problem.
Orthodontic retainers are oral appliances used with the purpose of keeping the teeth properly aligned and stable. They are usually the procedure used after braces are taken off the teeth. They are used to make sure that all the corrective work done by the braces was not in vain. Patients will usually get one retainer for the top teeth and another for the lower teeth. Their job is to make sure the teeth stay in place and do not change or shift to ensure you’ll always have a great smile. Retainers may be fixed or removable with removable being the most common. Retainers may be plastic, rubber or wire and are used with the purpose of helping your teeth to settle in the jawbone and keeping the tissue in good shape so it can continue to hold the teeth in place.
Invisalign is a special treatment used for patients that require braces but don’t want the traditional silver or colored braces that are very noticeable. Invisalign is a treatment of a group of aligners that are put on the teeth to shift them back into place where they belong. The aligners are custom made for each mouth and are the color of teeth to make them less noticeable, while still doing their job of properly shifting the teeth. The aligners are replaced every two weeks. Of all the orthodontics treatments designed to straighten teeth (braces, retainers, etc.), invisalign is the one that appears to be the most effective while using the least amount of effort and bother.
