Orthodontic retainers are oral appliances used with the purpose of keeping the teeth properly aligned and stable. They are usually the procedure used after braces are taken off the teeth. They are used to make sure that all the corrective work done by the braces was not in vain. Patients will usually get one retainer for the top teeth and another for the lower teeth. Their job is to make sure the teeth stay in place and do not change or shift to ensure you’ll always have a great smile. Retainers may be fixed or removable with removable being the most common. Retainers may be plastic, rubber or wire and are used with the purpose of helping your teeth to settle in the jawbone and keeping the tissue in good shape so it can continue to hold the teeth in place.
Invisalign is a special treatment used for patients that require braces but don’t want the traditional silver or colored braces that are very noticeable. Invisalign is a treatment of a group of aligners that are put on the teeth to shift them back into place where they belong. The aligners are custom made for each mouth and are the color of teeth to make them less noticeable, while still doing their job of properly shifting the teeth. The aligners are replaced every two weeks. Of all the orthodontics treatments designed to straighten teeth (braces, retainers, etc.), invisalign is the one that appears to be the most effective while using the least amount of effort and bother.
