Dental Implants
Dallas, TX – Cosmetic dentistry can provide a wide range of procedures to help a patient repair the look and feel of their teeth. These can include improving the shape and color of a tooth, and can have a dramatic affect on a persons smile and self-esteem. One of the more modern procedures that cosmetic dentists are performing is a dental implant. A dental implant is designed to replace a lost or damaged tooth with a completely new synthetic one. It requires that a small screw be placed in the patients jaw to anchor the new crown to with dental adhesive. This procedure can replace a single tooth, or an entire set of teeth in a patient. It can even be used to secure a set of top or bottom dentures and will provide a perfect and secure mounting for all of these problems.
Even though you have several options for the repair of a missing tooth, none of them are as effective or as long lasting as a dental implant. A dental implant will so closely replicate the actual look and feel of the original tooth that you might even forget you have one.
Another benefit to a dental implant over other solutions is that it helps prevent bone loss in your jaw. Studies have shown that once you lose a tooth, your body senses the loss and as a result the bone below the missing tooth starts to degrade. This is because the act of chewing stimulates the jawbone through the teeth and keeps it strong. This can be a problem for the other teeth surrounding the missing tooth as they can become loose as well. Even if the missing tooth is replaced with a denture or bridge, the jaw can still shrink because there is nothing above it that is connected to it. Using a dental implant that anchors to the jaw will provide this vital connection and stimulation for the jaw and help to keep it strong. The implant also helps with your gum health as well and will provide a tighter fit than a denture or bridge. Since the dental implant anchors directly to the jaw the artificial tooth above it moves less and there is less irritation to the gum as a result.
Placing a dental implant is a multi-visit procedure and will require a few steps to complete. The first thing the dentist does is to insert the anchor into a small hole he has formed in the jawbone. He will also take an impression of your mouth to have the crown created that will sit on top of the implant. Once the implant is placed, you need to wait for a few weeks to allow the implant to settle into the jawbone and fuse with the bone material. This ensures you a solid fit for the implant and will allow the crown to be placed securely. Once the implant has fused, the crown is then attached to the top of it with dental cement and the procedure is complete. Once set, the tooth will look and feel like your original tooth and will require the same level of dental hygiene as a normal tooth with brushing and flossing. This procedure is an excellent way to replace a tooth, or even an entire set of teeth for a patient and is just one more way that cosmetic dentistry is helping improve your dental health.
